Roastery Renovation Week 3 - Progress and Creativity in Full Swing

Week three of the roastery renovation marked a major turning point as we moved past the heavy construction phase and into the fun part—finishing touches that brought our vision to life!

Preserving the History: The Wooden Floors and Trim

We started the week by sealing the freshly revealed Oregon pine floors, doors, ceilings, and trim. These wood features have been a part of the building's history for so long, and our goal was to preserve and protect them while allowing their natural beauty to shine through. Sealing the wood was a meticulous process, but we knew that taking the time to do it right would ensure that these beautiful elements would be celebrated for many years to come.

As the sealant dried, we had to pause our work inside the main area, so we turned our attention to a few other key spaces: the bathroom and a new storeroom.

Creating a Family-Friendly Space

One of the decisions we're most excited about is incorporating family-friendly elements into our design. In the bathroom, we decided to carry over the arched design from the main roastery into an alcove above the basin. The counter in the bathroom will be made from the same reclaimed wood as our coffee counter, and we're extending it along the entire wall to include a space for a changing mat. This way, the bathroom will be functional not only for adults but also for families with small children—a nod to the family-friendly atmosphere we’ve always cherished in our cafe.

Painting and Preparing for the Final Touches

Once the floors were dry, we carefully covered them to protect the finish and began painting the interiors. Most of the walls are a bright, clean white, but we knew we wanted a standout feature in the roastery, so we opted to paint the arched wall in a deep dark chocolate or peppercorn color. This bold hue will highlight our arched opening and tie in beautifully with our matte black Genio Roaster.

With painting underway, the space is really beginning to take shape, and we can finally move on from construction decisions to focus on design details.

The Perfect Lighting: An Instagram Poll

One of the most exciting moments this week was choosing the lighting fixtures. We turned to our wonderful community on Instagram to help us make the final decision for the lights that would greet you as soon as you enter the roastery. The poll results are in, and we're thrilled to say that your favourite was also our favourite—a stunning fixture with a brass counterweight that brings a heritage-style touch to the space.

Choosing the lighting gave us a clearer vision of what we want our roastery to look and feel like. We’re blending industrial elements with a hint of old-school apothecary charm, and the lighting really helps solidify that vibe.

A Vision Taking Shape

As we head into the next phase of the renovation, we're starting to see our dream become a reality. The blend of heritage and modern elements, the arched details, and the preservation of the original woodwork are all coming together beautifully. We can’t wait to share more progress with you as we move closer to completing our new roastery space!
